Deja-vu for Aberystwyth as Citizens record back-to-back wins

Bangor City beat Nev Powell's Aberystwyth 3-2 for the second time this season on JD WPL Matchday 13

The Citizens registered their second consecutive JD Welsh Premier League victory within four days as they repeat another 3-2 win over Aberystwyth Town on Matchday 13.

The match began in the worst possible fashion for the home side as former Citizen Declan Walker netted from a corner kick in the fifth-minute to give Aberystwyth the lead with their first foray into Bangor territory.

The early lead for the visitors didn't last as an in-form Steven Hewitt fired home from close range to level proceedings with nine minutes played. Right back Guto Williams threaded a ball into the area and despite Aber's attempts at clearing Hewitt made no mistake from 6-yards out. The goal was Hewitt's third JD WPL goal of the season and his second against Aberystwyth this term.

On 14 minutes Luke Wall turned neatly in the area and sent a shot goalbound only to see the effort deflected behind for a corner kick. From the resulting flag kick on the left, Steven Hewitt sent over a cross to the far post which goalkeeper Chris Mullock grabbed before Anthony Miley could make contact.

Four minutes later, George Harry sent over another cross from the opposite flank but Dean Rittenberg's header lacked the necessary power to trouble Mullock unduly.

With 20 minutes gone, the effervescent Hewitt found space on the left to send a low delivery across the goalmouth but Mullock was again on hand to cut out the threat.

Brayden Shaw then went close when he fired a shot from the edge of the "D" that Mullock once again gathered. Meanwhile at the other end a John Owen cross narrowly evaded the incoming Luke Borelli at the far post on the half hour mark.

Two minutes later and the impressive Hewitt exchanged passes with George Harry before sending his shot agonisingly wide of the Aberystwyth upright. On 38 minutes Hewitt was denied yet again when an outstretched leg deflected a goalbound shot into the grateful arms of keeper Mullock.

With the half drawing to a close, Citizens guardian Matthew Hall pulled off a tremendous save to deny Aberystwyth skipper Jonny Spittle and keep the scores level at the interval.

Half-Time: Bangor City 1-1 Aberystwyth Town

At the restart, former Citizen John Owen was denied by a perfectly timed Anthony Miley challenge to nick the ball away as the forward bore down on goal. City responded with successive corner kicks before the visitors retook the lead on 50 minutes.

A long throw-in from the right hand was flicked on at the near post and found its way to an unmarked Luke Borrelli at the far post and the former Afan Lido man restored Aberystwyth's advantage as his shot found the bottom corner of the Bangor net.

Two minutes later and Aber centre back and skipper Spittle foolishly earned himself a booking for impeding a Citizens free kick on the edge of the home side's penalty area.

On 53 minutes Luke Wall sent a fierce shot goalwards and Mullock was at his best to tip the effort over the bar at the expense of a corner kick. The ever-dangerous Laurence Wilson sent a great delivery into the area on 55 minutes but Damien Allen's header sailed a foot or so off target.

As the play ebbed-and-flowed between the two sides, centre back Anthony Miley earned the second yellow card of the evening as he impeded the advancing Owen on 56 minutes.

With an hour played, Manager Kevin Nicholson then made the first substitution of the match as James Demetriou replaced George Harry and The Citizens opted for a traditional 4-4-2 formation.

Centre back Tom Kennedy found himself in an advanced position on 64 minutes and the former Bury and Rochdale stalwart saw his shot deflected over for another Bangor corner. Moments later and substitute Demetriou found time and space inside the area to drill an effort across the goalmouth which evaded the onrushing City forwards.

The equaliser eventually arrived after 73 minutes when Luke Wall volleyed home sweetly after two initial efforts by Wilson and Demetriou had been repelled by the Aberystwyth rearguard. The strike marked Wall's first JD WPL goal since his arrival from Accrington Stanley in the summer.

Referee Mark Petch then dipped into his notebook as Tom Kennedy became the evening's third yellow card (76 minutes) before Nev Powell made the first change for Aberystwyth with Hobson replacing Borrelli.

The decisive goal arrived with 79 minutes on the clock as Dean Rittenberg finished smartly on the edge of the area from Wilson's pass to record his third goal in two games to put The Citizens 3-2 ahead.

Undeterred, Aberystwyth fought back and the Citizens clawed a scrambled effort off their own goal line before instantly launching a lightning counter attack which was only halted by Melvin's unceremonious challenge on Rittenberg. Into the referee's notebook went Melvin with the fourth yellow card of the evening.

Six minutes from time and James Demetriou very nearly added a fourth goal for The Citizens but his dipping shot was narrowly off target. Aber then threw caution to the wind as Phillips replaced McKenna for the visitors.

With three minutes of added time announced, Aberystwyth again went close when a corner kick was headed narrowly wide. As the clock wound down, City replaced Brayden Shaw with Sion Edwards to see out the win.

Kevin Nicholson’s men held on to record their second 3-2 win over Aberystwyth Town this season and with it their second JD WPL win in four days to keep them within touching distance of the leading trio in the league table.
