As Prestatyn Town skipper Mike Parker told us here at WPL.Cymru earlier in the season, clashes between these two teams are always very entertaining affairs for the neutral, and certainly any of those unbiased fans in attendance at Bastion Gardens on Friday night were treated to some game!

Four goals in the first half encapsulated just how open and competitive an affair this was, with both sides taking turns to lead the game in the opening 45 minutes. The Seasiders got off to the dream start as Jack Kenny scored to make it 1-0 after some ninety seconds, sending Neil Gibson’s men crazy, but Bangor were back on level terms soon afterwards as Dean Rittenberg equalised following a mistake from Carl Jones in goal to make it 1-1.

From then on, Bangor had a sustained spell of positive play, with Brayden Shaw, James Demetriou and Rittenberg all causing problems for the home side with their movement and combination play. Shaw had a couple of efforts from distance saved or fly narrowly wide, whereas Rittenberg and Demetriou also threatened to give the visitors the lead.

In the end the responsibility fell to Stephen Hewitt who, following great work from Shaw and Rittenberg down the left, was given the perfect ball to run on to on the edge of the box following Rittenberg’s cutback and he slotted home from 25 yards to make it 2-1 and Bangor looked to be cruising.

The home side weren’t having it though, as they fought back instantly and slowly built their way back until they were in the ascendency. A superb delivery from a corner by James Stead was all it took for Reece Fairhurst to make it 2-2 after half an hour, and Prestatyn threatened twice more to add to the scoresheet before the half was over, but it stayed 2-2 until the interval.

Demetriou had the ball in the back of the net for the visitors three minutes into the second half, but it was disallowed for offside to let the home side off the hook somewhat, but Prestatyn were finding some success soaking up the pressure from the visitors and looking to hit on the break.

Things took a turn for the worse for The Citizens as two bookings in quick succession saw Shaw given his marching orders, forcing them to play 15 minutes with 10 men, but even if Shaw was on the field it’s questionable what he could have done to prevent what followed a few moments later as Ben Maher probed from some 30 yards out before unleashing an incredible effort that struck the underside of Roberts’ crossbar and went in to make it 3-2.

In the dying moments of the game, with Bangor looking to get out and push for an equaliser, a pass back to Roberts was under-hit and Prestatyn’s Kenny pounced to poke it beyond the onrushing keeper to make it 4-2 and give the home aide a deserved victory and valuable three points.
