Citizens left stunned by remarkable Met comeback

Bangor City slip to fourth place after starting the day in pole position in the JD Welsh Premier League table

Eliot Evans' brace and substitute Harry Owen's 85th-minute strike seals a stunning comeback as Cardiff Met clinch a remarkable 3-2 victory at Nantporth.

The Citizens started the day in top spot in the JD WPL standings but contrived to blow a two-goal lead as an energetic Met side staged a dramatic comeback in the closing 20 minutes.

New signing James Demetriou was handed a full start following his goalscoring debut at Bala Town last Saturday, with Dean Rittenberg starting out wide in place of Brayden Shaw in City's only change to the starting line-up from last time out.

The home side started brightly and following a couple of early corner kicks James Demetriou created the best opening in the 9th minute when his cross form the left flank was flicked just inches past the far post by the head of Dean Rittenberg.

City continued to create the better opportunities and Assistant Manager Taylor-Fletcher forced Met 'keeper Will Fuller to save with his legs on 14 minutes.

On 24 minutes, midfielder and September Goal of the Month winner Steven Hewitt was tripped on the edge of the penalty area. Laurence Wilson whipped in the free kick but the ball hit the near post side-netting to the visitors' relief.

The Citizens continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession but Met were always a threat on the counter and Connor Roberts was forced into a smart save 10 minutes before the half-time break.

The home side plugged away and a short back pass from the Met defence left Fuller exposed but the Archers' keeper managed to clear ahead of the incoming James Demetriou on 37 minutes.

Luke Wall was the next to test Fuller as his cross from deep out on the left had the Cardiff guardian at full stretch to collect. With the half-time break looming, The Citizens made the all-important breakthrough.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher dropped deep to collect a ball and his reverse pass caused havoc in the Met defence and from a tight angle on the right-hand byeline Danny Holmes' cut back was tucked away by Damien Allen at the near post.

Half-Time: Bangor City 1-0 Cardiff Met Uni

City made a change at the interval with record signing Brayden Shaw replacing Dean Rittenberg (hamstring).

On 53 minutes, Steven Hewitt sent over an in-swinging corner kick that Fuller once again collected from under the crossbar without any undue pressure from the Citizens attack.

Just a minute later and Cardiff Met spurned an opportunity as Connor Roberts saved one-handed low to his left from an Adam Roscrow shot.

Substitute Shaw followed Damien Allen into referee Huw Jones' notebook for a pull back on a breaking Met midfielder to concede a free kick after 58 minutes midway into City territory. From the resulting set-piece, the Citizens breathed a collective sigh of relief as the visitors' Chris Baker struck the foot of the post from close range.

Just after the hour, George Harry replaced James Demetriou for The Citizens and on 67 minutes Fuller was again to the fore as he saved a Brayden Shaw effort from Laurence Wilson's through ball.

Cardiff Met then made their first change of the afternoon with Harry Owen replacing Gwion Howell on the left wing. However, seconds later and City extended their lead as Brayden Shaw poked home from six-yards after Fuller had saved Luke Young's initial shot.

Substitute Owen was prominent just two minutes later as Met pulled a goal back through Eliot Evans to reduce the arrears with a firm strike (70 minutes).

Cardiff Met then stunned the home side on 77 minutes as they countered swiftly through Adam Roscrow's run down the right flank and the resulting cross was headed home by Evans once more. Remarkably, the equaliser was Evans' seventh goal against The Citizens since Met's arrival in the WPL.

With 5 minutes left on the clock the visitors then clinched the points when substitute Owen pounced onto a ball at the near post after the Citizens contrived to make a meal of a seemingly straightforward clearance.

City threw one last roll of the dice as Anderson Cayola replaced Gary Taylor-Fletcher on 86 minutes, and with the fourth official announcing a minimum of 3 minutes of added time, Brayden Shaw was once again frustrated by Fuller as the Cardiff keeper saved at full-stretch low to his left.

However, it was not to be for The Citizens as Met completed a remarkable comeback to take all 3 points and move into second spot behind TNS in the JD WPL table as City slip to fourth-place after Connah's Quay Nomads' 2-1 win at Carmarthen.
