City's Ladies go down to late goal at home to Denbigh
Great performance by Bangor City's Ladies in hard fought 3-2 Home defeat
Great performance by Bangor City Ladies in their 2nd league match of the season, as they played host to Denbigh Town. Excellent football on show from City again and an all round great showing pushed Denbigh all the way and Bangor were unfortunate to lose out to a late goal. A valiant performance which saw City come from behind twice only to concede with less than 5 minutes to go and eventually succumb 3-2.
Bangor started the game well playing with excellent intensity, ensuring the opposition had no time to get into the game, and when in possession passing the ball around well, always looking to play forward!!! The half developed into a closely fought encounter with City having the better of the open play, with half-chances coming, but Denbigh looking dangerous from set-pieces. Eventually it was that which broke the deadlock as the away side took the lead with a scrambled finish from a corner.
Showing excellent spirit and determination after going behind, City kept the pressure on the opposition, playing good football and looking dangerous in attack. Bangor's attacking endeavour soon paid off as good possession deep in the Denbigh half saw the ball played back to Hannah McGoona on the left corner of the box and she curled the ball into the far corner to score her 1st goal for the club and restore parity. With renewed vigour after getting reward for their efforts City looked like taking the lead only for good goalkeeping to deny Ceri Thomas, Lexi Crawley and Cerys Gadd. However, another away corner before HT saw Denbigh head-in to take the lead, which they held until the break the sides going in at HT 1-2.
Again demonstrating the outstanding resolve and character which this team already possesses, Bangor came out strongest after the break. Taking the game to the opposition more, looking to win the ball back even higher up the pitch and then look to get more midfield runners in the box to support. Again and again City came close to scoring, moving the ball around quicker in the 2nd period and getting in behind the opposition defence on numerous occasions with a good chance for Paige Musgrave in the box, Ceri hitting narrowly over from the edge and Lexi just wide of the right-hand upright!!!
Continuing to strive for the win another excellent Bangor attack, this time down the right, could only be stopped by the opposition conceding a free-kick wide on the right. A dangerous ball into the box from Lexi saw Angharad Evans react 1st and finish from 3 yards out to claim a deserved equaliser and a 1st league goal for the club. Scoring with 7 minutes to go and in the ascendancy City carried on attacking but were unable to break-down a resolute opposition defence and with less than 5 minutes to go a shot from the edge of box went in to give Denbigh a 3-2 victory.
Outstanding performance all round from Bangor City, highly competitive match, fantastic development already on display not only playing excellent football moving the ball around nicely and linking up together well but defensively looking very solid restricting Denbigh's opportunities from open play to speculative efforts. Player of the Match for City was Beth Jones, who had an brilliant performance at the back, disposing of the opposition attacks and distributing the ball well to get us on the front foot. Well done everyone another great showing, keep it up, on to another home game next week V Northop Hall.
