Bangor City's Development squad round off their home programme with a comprehensive nine-goal win over Newtown
Bangor City's Development squad rounded off their home Welsh Premier Development North programme with a comprehensive nine-goal win over a valiant Newtown at Nantporth on Sunday afternoon.
City went ahead through Alex Boss early on but a threadbare Newtown proved resilient opposition for the opening half hour. The young Citizens seized the initiative with three goals within as many minutes just after the half hour with leading marksman Sam Jones doubling the advantage on 32 minutes after neat work on the right from Sam Ashworth.
Striker Jones claimed his second a minute later as he lifted the ball over his defensive marker before producing an exquisite finish. Cai Huws then added City's fourth following good work by Sam Ashworth and Alex Boss once more. Four minutes before the break and Ashworth was again instrumental in setting up Alex Boss to crash home at the near post.
Half Time: Bangor City U19 5-0 Newtown U19
Coach Dave Cavanagh made a double change at the interval with Harry Hughes and Tom Innes replacing Cai Huws and Deegan Booton. The Citizens then extended their advantage within two minutes of the restart as Sam Jones notched his ha-trick with a 10-yard finish from a corner kick manoeuvre.
Newtown's plight was further hindered by the loss of right back Cenwyn Jones early in the second period and without substitutes the Robins were forced to complete the match with only ten men. In fairness to the visitors, they stuck to their tasks and continued to play football and stifled City's threat for the majority of the second period.
However, a late flourish from the Citizens saw the home side net a further three goals in the closing ten minutes as the opposition noticeably tired with the numerical deficit. Sam Jones notched his fourth of the afternoon on 82 minutes, before netting his fifth just three minutes later with a straightforward finish from Alex Boss' incisive work down the right.
With three minutes remaining, the Citizens completed the rout with a ninth goal as Alex Boss claimed his own hat-trick in a win that confirms City will finish in third place in the WPDL North with one more game to complete at Prestatyn on Tuesday night (7:30pm Kick Off).
