Outstanding performance by City's U16 girls to secure 1st victory of the season
Emphatic 2nd half come back by Bangor's U16 Girls to claim victory over Bethel
Saturday 17th September saw Bangor City FC U16 Girls host Bethel in their 1st home match of the 2016-2017 season. A fantastic performance ensured the girls secured a 1st victory of the season as they ran out 6-4 winners after a devastating 2nd half comeback.
Bangor started the match the brightest playing with a fantastic tempo, always looking to get onto the front foot and get into the final 3rd which saw them carve numerous openings in the 1st 10 minutes. However, despite being on top during the opening period of the game the girls found themselves 1-0 after being caught out on the counter attack. Excellent link up play between the midfield and strikers again saw Bangor get in behind the Bethel defence on a number of occasions but the girls were unable to capitalise and another 2 quick counterattacking goals saw City go 3-0 down.
Showing excellent spirit and determination the girls did not let the score-line phase them kept playing their football, winning the ball back high up the pitch and looking to break through the line of the Bethel defence. This endeavour was soon rewarded as great work between Ceri Thomas and Angharad Evans down the right hand side saw Ceri put the ball across the box to her strike partner Ceri Roberts who finished off the fantastic move. With renewed vigour Bangor kept pressing to get further back into the game but were unable to make another breakthrough before half-time and another goal for the visitors saw them go in leading 4-1 at the interval.
Again showing the fantastic application and belief they have developed over the past 3 seasons together, the girls did not let they're heads go down and came out for the 2nd half determined to get themselves back into the game, knowing they had been the stronger side 1st half but without making the most of their chances. At 1st the 2nd half continued in much the same vein with Bangor dominating the play, linking up well together to create chances but failing to convert chances into goals.
However, this deadlock was soon broken as 2 quick fire goals from Ceri Thomas saw Bangor reduce the deficit to 3-4 with plenty of time remaining in the match. Finally converting their chances gave the team a new confidence, sweeping forward in attack, moving the ball out wide quickly, with midfield players then driving forward to the box to create chances. This attacking vigour was soon rewarded as a driving run from Shannon Jones in the midfield saw her bring the scores level with a sublime finish before Yasmin Williams gave City the lead after a great switch of play by Angharad down the right saw her find Yasmin in space to finish from the edge of the box.
An inspirational 2nd half comeback was soon sealed by captain and hat-tick hero Ceri Thomas who, back to goal, picked up the ball on the half-way line beat off 3 defenders to drive into the box and slot home to give City's girls a deserved victory and Ceri her 1st hat-trick of the season. A fantastic all round performance by Bangor's girls in just they're 2nd match of the campaign gave them a well earned win.
Player of the match for Bangor was Shannon Jones who had a great game in the middle of the park working tirelessly to press the opposition and then starting Bangor attacking moves, with Managers Player of the Match as Siwan Williams who had an great game in defence, making key tackles and starting off Bangor attacks with excellent distribution. Outstanding performance by everyone, well done girls, keep up the hard work!!!
