Mervyn Jones (1931-2016)

By Kevin Owen

It is with great regret that Bangor City FC have to announce the passing of former player John Merfyn (Mervyn) Jones

A tricky left winger, Bangor-born Mervyn Jones was a member of the Bangor City side then playing in the Cheshire League at the beginning of the 1950’s. Although diminutive in stature, Jones soon attracted the attentions of several Football League clubs.

Jones signed for Liverpool in December 1951, but his first team opportunities were restricted to four appearances in his time with the Reds. A transfer to Scunthorpe United in July 1953 was to prove much more productive for the wingman, scoring 27 goals in 240 appearances over six seasons.

In June 1959 he moved to Crewe Alexandra and scored 14 goals in 84 appearances for The Railwaymen, including one of Crewe's two goals in a historic 2–2 FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Tottenham Hotspur on 30 January 1960.

A further move closer to home with a transfer to Chester in August 1961 produced 10 goals in 63 matches. Jones moved to Lincoln City in 1963, before seeing out his playing career with Gainsborough Trinity. In total, Mervyn made 392 Football League appearances with a return of 51 goals.

Bangor City FC would like to extend their deepest sympathy to Mervyn’s family and friends.
