Late Winner Secures Under-19's Win at Llandudno

Substitute Cai Huws grabs late winner as young Citizens complete WPDL double over Llandudno

A cold and drizzly night in Llandudno saw the return fixture of the young Citizens facing a Llandudno team who were keen to turn the tables after their loss to a well organised and determined Bangor team on the previous Sunday. Both teams started very brightly, with aggressive forward play and counter attacking from both teams.

3 minutes played in a high tempo game, and Sam Jones reads the game well and intercepts a Llandudno pass running through mid-field. He runs forward and plays a perfect diagonal pass into the forward run of Jake Jones, who composes himself in front of goal and puts Bangor 1-0 in front.

7 minutes played, and Bangor create more chances and get a free kick deep into Llandudno territory. Geraint Jones curls the free kick deep into the Llandudno penalty box. Bangor challenge for the ball, but Llandudno are able to clear their lines.

9 minutes into the game, and the unrelenting pressure by Bangor releases Alex Boss on the right flank. He drives forward, changing direction several times as he winds his way into the penalty area where he is unfairly challenged having his heels clipped from behind, but the referee has another view, and a penalty kick is not given.

13 minutes, and a reckless, high footed challenge give Bangor another free kick in our own half. A long range, lofted cross by Bangor No.6 Geraint Jones puts Llandudno under more pressure, but to their credit, Llandudno defend and clear the danger once again.

18 minutes played, and strong mid-field play from Bangor puts a quality ball forward to Gethin Thomas whose direct and powerful run straight down the middle releases Alex Boss who is judged to be just offside.

22 minutes and two quality crosses in open play from Geraint Jones deep into the Llandudno penalty box sees two chances go to waste for Bangor.

24 minutes gone, and a heated tackle between Bangor’s strong right back, Deegan Booton and Llandudno’s No.11 calls for the referees attention. A drop ball is awarded and played back to Bangor’s on-form keeper, Leon Jones.

27 minutes and a high, two footed tackle on Gethin Thomas, who does very well not to react negatively, results in the first yellow card of the game for Llandudno.

34 minutes played, and the pressure from Llandudno draws a foul from Bangor’s centre back Ben Williams, who is very unlucky to receive a yellow card from the referee.

37 minutes played, and Llandudno’s relentless pressure is rewarded when a forced Bangor error sees an ill-advised pass played across the face of the penalty box. Bangor lose possession to the dogged determination of Llandudno’s No.11 who unselfishly plays a simple pass into the path of his team mate, who slots the ball into an empty net.

Half Time: Llandudno 1 – 1 Bangor City

Bangor start brightly from the kick-off, a long ball into the corner for a determined run by Alex Boss, but defended well and the ball goes out of play.

59 minutes, and a driven cross by Gruff Stead deep into the Llandudno six yard box, a scrambled shot, sees some desperate defending by Llandudno to clear the danger.

66 minutes played, and a Llandudno free-kick is floated over Bangor’s defence line and a deft touch from Llandudno’s striker sends the ball on target, but Leon’s acrobatic dive to his right side secures a terrific save.

68 minutes into the second half and a long, diagonal from the right sees a confident Sam Jones attempt a first time volley, only to see his effort go over the cross bar.

70 minutes of sustained, strong pressure from Bangor sees Sam Jones left footed effort make it 2-1 to Bangor.

72 minutes and Llandudno’s relentless pressure results in a poor foul on Sam Jones. A deep free kick by Geraint Jones into the penalty box sees Jake Jones unlucky not to make contact for a very close range effort.

The ball is out of play, and Bangor take the opportunity to make their first substitution. Alex Boss is replaced by Jason Banks.

76 minutes played and the game is stopped as Harry Hughes is injured. He is taken off the field for treatment and play continues.

78 minutes and Harry indicates he can’t continue, and Bangor make the second substitution and bring on Cai Huws.

81 minutes and Llandudno’s continued pressure gets Bangor on the back foot and Sam Jones’ high foot challenge in our own penalty box gives Llandudno the opportunity to level the score with a penalty. Llandudno’s prolific winger, No11 places the ball neatly in Bangor’s net. Now it’s game on!

84 minutes and it’s Bangor who are turning up the pressure to regain the lead. Llandudno are relieved to see a rebounded attempt on goal fall directly into their keeper’s hands.

87 minutes and as both teams rack up the pressure, Llandudno can’t keep their discipline and concede another yellow card.

89 minutes, and massive pressure from Bangor as they try to secure a victory. Bangor play some close range, quick passing down the right flank. A driven shot goes through the wall of players to be picked up by “super sub” Cai Huws, running in from a left back position. He takes two touches forward, and from close range, taps the ball into the Llandudno net!
