Keeping Up With The Joneses!

Four goal Sam Jones & hat-trick debutant Jake Jones provide the firepower for emphatic Under-19's win

Bangor City's Under-19 Development team proved too strong for their Conwy Borough counterparts on a wet Sunday afternoon at Nantporth.

The young Citizens gave a debut to new recruit Jake Jones as they sought their first back-to-back wins of the 2017/18 Welsh Premier Development League (North) season.

City started brightly with striker Sam Jones testing the Conwy 'keeper early on before further efforts from Gethin Thomas and Gruff Stead were also repelled by the Tangerines' defence.

The breakthrough finally came after 20 minutes when Sam Jones volleyed home at the far post from a set-piece delivery to give the Citizens a deserved lead.

The lead was doubled on 38 minutes when Gethin Thomas intuitively followed up his initial strike which hit the Conwy upright and tapped-in with relative ease for a 2-0 half-time advantage.

City upped the pace in the second period and within 8 minutes of the restart, debutant Jake Jones made it 3-0 for the Citizens with a well struck left-footed finish from 15-yards range.

With an hour played, the young Citizens went further ahead when Jake Jones beat the Conwy keeper with a header at the near post from Gruff Stead's corner kick delivery.

Any thoughts of an uninterrupted afternoon for the reigning WPDL North champions were soon dismissed as Conwy's Adam Buckley profited from a defensive error to pull a goal back for the visitors (4-1) on 66 minutes.

With 15 minutes remaining, Sam Jones scored City's fifth with an instinctive finish from Guto Williams' inswinging free kick out on the left touchline.

Conwy were by now on the ropes and just a minute later, Jake Jones completed a debut hat-trick when hesitancy in the Conwy defence saw the 'keeper dispossessed for Jones to roll the ball home for City's sixth goal of the afternoon.

The Tangerines claimed a second goal on 82 minutes when a straightforward punt by the Conwy 'keeper caught the City defence napping and Owen Woodfield lobbed Bangor guardian Leon Jones to make the score 6-2.

On 86 minutes, the Conwy 'keeper was fortunate to escape with just a booking as he brought down substitute Cai Huws well outside his area. From the resulting free kick, Guto Williams fed a short pass to Sam Jones and the striker duly completed his second consecutive hat-trick with a neat finish to extend City's lead to 7-2.

As the match drew to a close, Sam Jones added another to his afternoon's tally and make the final score Bangor City U19 8-2 Conwy Borough U19 with what proved to be the last kick of the match.
