City Under-19's collect another 3 Points at Newtown

Young Citizens register their fifth consecutive WPDL North win with a 4-1 victory at Latham Park

Bangor City Under-19s travelled to Newtown's Latham Park on Sunday looking to build on their recent form and consolidate their position as one of the Welsh Premier Development League North frontrunners.

The young Citizens began the game at a high tempo, pressing Newtown on both flanks, and switching play comfortably through the midfield areas. With just seven minutes on the clock, City opened the score as Gruff Stead took advantage of a slip by the Robins defender to attack the right-hand byeline and cross to Sam Jones, whose control and close-range shot put Bangor 1-0 ahead.

The hosts responded immediately as Robins pressure forced an error in the City backline but recent First Team call-up Deegan Booton made a timely interception to steal the ball away from the onrushing Newtown forward (9'). Striker Sam Jones was proving to be a handful for the Newtown defence and came close to extending the lead with a low, powerful drive that whistled past the Robins' upright on 17 minutes.

With just over 5 minutes to play before the break, the Citizens saw a succession of chances go begging. Sam Jones saw another effort narrowly miss the target before the Newtown keeper saved acrobatically from a powerful Guto Williams header two minutes later. On 42 minutes, Gruff Stead sent a teasing free kick delivery over from the right flank but the Robins keeper was again able to claim without further damage before the half-time whistle.

Within five minutes of the restart, City doubled their advantage as Sam Jones turned provider to set up Gruff Stead who finished confidently from close-range to put the Citizens 2-0 ahead.

The home side were stung into action and with 53 minutes played, Citizens keeper Leon Jones was at his best to deny the Robins as he palmed the ball away from the top left corner of his goal. At the other end, a lightning quick counter attack by the Citizens saw Alex Boss strike the crossbar with a powerful shot.

With 59 minutes played, Newtown reduced the arrears as a cross from the right wing was driven to the far post and the Robins forward sent a composed shot into the bottom left corner beyond the reach of Citizens guardian Leon Jones.

Manager Dave Cavanagh then made two quick-fire substitutions with Geraint Jones replacing Deegan Booton and Jason Banks replacing Harry Hughes as the Citizens opted for a more attack minded formation going into the latter stages of the match. The changes paid dividends with around ten minutes left on the clock.

A determined run by Jake Jones down the right saw his cross elude the Citizens frontline only to find Alex Boss whose shot rattled the Robins woodwork before Cai Owen netted on the rebound to make it Newtown 1-3 Bangor City.

With the match entering the closing minutes, the Citizens put the game beyond any doubt as substitute Cai Huws fired home from 12-yards after a Guto Williams cross created uncertainty in the Newtown penalty area (85').

Full-Time: Newtown U19 1-4 Bangor City U19

The win was the young Citizens fifth consecutive WPDL North victory on a weekend that saw wins for three other leading clubs as Airbus UK Broughton, Connah's Quay Nomads and Bala Town also collected three points.
